Silhouettes on the Line

I decided I would document my progress of my final project.

First I had to clean and dry off my leaves so the paint would stick.

After they were all cleaned and dried any leaves that were bent I pressed them so they were all straight and all the points could be seen. I went outside after with my leaves to go paint them.

After I laid them down with newspaper I painted each side and let them dry. After, I flipped them and painted the other side. When they were all dry I checked them to make sure they all we cover completely and had an even coat of paint. If any were not up to expectation I re-painted them until they were at a desired state of black.

After they were all painted I strung them with fish wire to tack to the ceiling.

Essentially they all look like this. Leaf, string, tack.

Finally after hanging up 20 of my silhouette leaves, I documented how many points were on each leaf. I printed out how many to catalog them and placed the identification above the leaf.

Now everyone can see how truly leaves are different they way I saw them.

The Final Proposal – Silhouettes on the Line

For my final project on the line I decided to go with my second proposal, but I have altered it. My original idea was to cut out different things I saw on the line out of black paper. After realizing how time consuming it was for the amount that I would need. Also when starting this idea I was more interested in the idea and making the actual project was starting to feel like a drag and I wanted to enjoy my final piece. If I enjoy it I’m sure other people will too.

I had decided to go walk the line to collect leaves that I could turn into silhouettes. I would paint them black and have them hanging from a ceiling.

Why leaves?? Well most people see leaves and just walk away or they try to get rid of them because they just make the ground messy. Well, I see leaves differently. When looking at a leaf you would see that no one is exactly the same. If you look really close you see that there are different points on a leaf.

My second idea was to have lights cast shadows so you could see the interesting shadows they made. After meeting with Brett and Bridget they had given me an idea how to really focus on how unique the leaves are. Leading to my third and final idea.. I have decided I will catalog the leaves by showing what makes leaves different from each other or what makes them similar.

For my final project you will see a line of leaves hanging from the ceiling and have a catalog to help you discover and see what makes these leaves I collected different from each other.

The Proposals

For my final project of doing the line and incorporating my word I have several different ideas I am thinking about.

PROPOSAL # 1:

When exploring the line I had found that making shapes with your hands creates a silhouette on whatever you want it to be projected on depending on the light source. I had an idea of making shapes with my hands to make a story line of walking the line using my hands or some cut outs since some just can’t be made with hands.

The rabbit could be my narrator of the line and video tape him traveling the line.

PROPOSAL # 2:

My second idea for my final project was to cut out silhouette object that are on the line and not incorporating hands. The silhouette objects would be hanging from string so when the light is shined upon them there would be multiple silhouette shadows that would fill up a big room. I was thinking I could hang them from the ceiling in Cohen with tape. There would be many of them, like over 200. I wouldn’t mind hanging them all up myself so they all would have different relations with each other. It is like bring the line into a space for everyone to see what I saw that was important on the line.

PROPOSAL # 3:

For my last idea I wanted to work with actual photography and people. I was thinking of having friends model for me on the line and I could capture their shadows and or their silhouette. I than thought of what could I do with the pictures after they all were printed out. I thought it would be a really cool idea to make them into the shape of a persons silhouette. It wouldn’t be life size it would be around 2 or 3 feet tall.

Puppets on the Line

Walking the line alone can inspire you to have to entertain yourself. With my word being “silhouette” I came up with a way to do so. As little kids would do with flashlights or for fun I did the same by using the sunlight. I made shadow puppets. They kept me entertained while walking the line.

WARNING: If you decided to do this and people are around you people will stop and stare at you like you are crazy, but being a foundations student.. well.. we already know we are.

Follow Your Shadow

While trying to incorporate my word into the line I decided I would use my shadow to walk the line. It was fun and a bit hard because my shadow always wanted to be behind me so instead of walking forwards I walked backwards so my shadow eventually lead me.

Exploration #22

PEOPLE WATCHING- ALTERNATE: PEOPLE MAPPING

SIT IN A PUBLIC SPACE AND CREATE A COLOR COATED MAP OF THE POSITION OF THE OTHER PEOPLE IN RELATION TO YOU. NOTE WHAT THE OTHER PEOPLE LOOKED LIKE (WHAT WERE THEY WEARING?)

I decided to do this exploration because I though it was a good way to see silhouettes that people cast as they walk in the daylight.

Silhouette Leaves

While exploring the line I collected leaves and brought them back to my room. I brought back a ton because I wasn’t sure how cutting into leaves would work and how many I would break. I ended up using all of my leaves because as I expected I broke a bunch of leaves because they were so fragile.

How to Wander Aimlessly

I had packed my backpack with water, my ipod, my phone, keys, chapstick, a blanket, my notebook, a pen, and gloves. I left around 4pm wearing hiking boots and a warm jacket. I decided walking the line in the woods would be a wonderful place to get lost.

I decided I would walk the line but wander off at some points and try to find the line again.

When I got to my first spot i set down my blanket and decided to write anything I could think of, but basically how I was feeling at the time. My main topic was how I wish my girlfriend could be here to experience this with me because where I was it was truly beautiful.

I packed up my stuff and started to wander again and when I made it to my second destination I set my blanket down on a tree trunk that was on the ground. Again I decided to listen to my ipod and stare at the scenery. I wasn’t sure where I was or if I would run into people but I was ok with this. I pulled out my notebook and decided to doodle.

When the sun started to go down I decided I would head down and I took another pathway down. It was a nice relaxing day that I was able to get lost and have fun.

Silhouettes on the Line

While exploring the line I brought my camera with me to document some silhouettes. Most people would think finding silhouettes would be easy but I found it to be a bit changeling. Finding shadows was a lot easier.
